Light Fuel Treatment
Light fuel treatment involves strategically removing low-volume, fast-burning vegetation like grasses and fine shrubs to prevent rapid wildfire spread and reduce overall fire intensity. This practice aims to disrupt the fuel's continuity, creating conditions where fires are easier for firefighters to manage, burn at lower intensities, and have smaller flame lengths. Our most visable program involves the deployment of goats in targeted sections of the Del Monte Forest.
Goats are extremely low impact in addition to being an environmentally friendly and "naturally occuring" measure. Since they consume most grasses and weeds, including poison oak, they are the perfect light fuel reduction measure. In areas where sensitive or protected plant species grow, crews will clear sections by hand.
