Fuel Reduction Project - Los Altos Road

Pebble Beach CSD and CAL FIRE Begin Roadside Fuel Reduction Project on Los Altos Drive

A sign indicates entry to a fire hazard mitigation project, with a red fire truck parked nearby in a wooded area.

Shaded fuel break targets the site of the 1987 Morse Fire

This section of shaded fuel break is especially important to Pebble Beach residents. It is where the 1987 Morse Fire started below Huckleberry Hill and crossed the roadway, destroying 34 homes.

"While we can't change the steep topography or stop the winds, we can manage the fuels," said Battalion Chief Greg Leonard.

Project objectives include:

A logging scene showing workers, machinery, and cut logs in a forested area with trees and foliage around.

    •    Removing hazard trees along the roadway

    •    Increasing spacing between trees

    •    Reducing ladder fuels that allow fire to climb into the tree canopy

    •    Preserving sensitive plant species

A serene forest scene featuring tall trees, blue skies, and a mix of grassy and bare earth areas.

Together, these actions will produce a healthier forest with a reduced fire risk.

Pebble Beach CSD and CAL FIRE are proud to work in partnership with Pebble Beach Company and the Del Monte Forest Conservancy to protect the community.

What residents can expect: Crews will be working along the roadway. Please drive carefully, watch for crews and equipment, and follow posted signs.
