Fire-Smart Landscaping

Lush green shrubs surrounded by reddish-brown rocky gravel in front of a white wall.

Developing a fire-smart landscape goes beyond just maintaining a neat yard. It involves choosing and placing fire-resistant native plants that thrive in California’s dry climate. Fire-smart landscaping is cost-effective too, as it conserves water and can increase your property value.

For tailored advice on native fire-resistant plants, contact Pebble Beach Fire Department at (831) 375-9644 to schedule a tour of PBCSD’s Fire Safe Garden. Fire Prevention staff can guide you in creating an effective, fire-smart landscape.

Plant Spacing

Proper spacing between grass, shrubs, and trees is key in slowing wildfire spread. This spacing varies based on vegetation type, size, and land slope – larger plants on steeper slopes require more space than smaller vegetation on flat areas.

Tree spacing guide: 6-foot clearance, 3x shrub height, 2x shrub distance, 10-foot tree distance, flat to mild slope (<20%).
Vertical spacing
  • Trim tree branches up to at least 6 feet from the ground.
  • Increase vertical space between shrubs and trees to prevent fire from climbing.
  • Use a formula for vertical spacing: Multiply shrub height by 3 for clearance.

For example: A 5-foot shrub near a tree needs 15 feet of clearance to the tree’s lowest branch.

Horizontal Spacing

Horizontal spacing depends on the slope of the land and the height of the shrubs or trees. Check the chart to determine spacing distance.
